Are you new to the Blogsphere? Don’t know which blog software to choose? Or you’re just totally lost, need a primer to read. This article is for you, “Time to check: Are you using the right blogging tool?” (http://www.ojr.org/ojr/stories/050714gardner/) from Online Journalism Review (http://www.ojr.org/). (Caution: if you’re going to print out this article, be sure to use the printer-friendly version on the top of the screen.)

A companion chart to the article “Blog software comparison chart” (http://www.ojr.org/ojr/images/blog_software_comparison.cfm) did a good job on comparing the listed software’s functionality, extras, spam fighting tools, maintenance, design, and publishing interface.

I also found the comments to the article very interesting, among them, many are blog/computer geeks. And several popular blog software (among the geeks) are pointed out in the comments, including some open source software, which are to my interest, such as Scoop, Drupal.

Although I decided to use WordPress before reading this article, I still found this to be a good read.

Thanks Paul R. Pival for pointing this out in his blog, the Distant Librarian.

Yesterday, FirstGov.gov(http://www.FirstGov.gov) and FirstGov en Español (http://www.espanol.gov) launched the government’s most powerful search engine for U.S. government information that powered by Vivisimo’s (vivisimo.com) Velocity search engine, famous for its federated-search and clustering capabilities. See Vivisimo’s press release “FirstGov.gov Goes Live with Vivisimo’s Velocity Next-Generation Search Portal“.

Some highlights of the new search engine that you may find useful:

1. Has a dedicated search page at http://www.firstgovsearch.gov/;

2. the knowledge base is increased from 8 million documents to over 40 million documents, and continues to grow with the Web;

3.
Vivisimo’s powerful meta search platform pulls results from a number of government databases in addition to the Microsoft’s MSN Search index, which includes: FirstGov’s database of answers from the citizen help line 1-800-FED-INFO, the US Government’s telephone hotline; MyMoney.gov’s database of recommended personal finance website; Forms.gov’s database of federal forms; USAJOBS, federal employment listings; Podcasts from federal websites and automobile rankings from Fueleconomy.gov and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration; 4. search results are organized into clusters (categories) under three sorting umbrellas (by topic, by agency, by source).
